Getting Children Ready

School readiness begins before birth. Good pre-natal care leads to healthy birth outcomes. Babies who securely attach to their parents and caregivers are more likely to try new things like talking, crawling, and walking. Toddlers who are encouraged to “explore” in safe environments build their brains by getting to know the people and things that make up their world. Preschoolers enrolled in developmentally appropriate learning environments develop the behaviors and skills necessary to be ready for kindergarten. In each of these ages and stages parents and other caregivers help build the foundation for further development – they scaffold the learning process.

At Success By 6 we are committed to working with our partners to make resources available so that parents understand their role in promoting healthy development and have the tools they need to be the best they can be. That’s why we promote Born Learning, a free parent education resource, and why we believe that home visitation, during the early years, empowers parents to be their children’s first and best teacher. It’s also why we promote early care and education and work with child care referral agencies to help parents understand what to look for and how to make informed choices.
